Pharmacy and Therapeutics Competition
What is the P&T Competition?
The Pharmacy and Therapeutics (P&T) competition is designed to expose pharmacy students to the process of formulary management. The local and national competition will give students an opportunity to hone a variety of skills including critical analysis, presentation and research skills. Students will learn to develop and manage a formulary system through evaluating literature, conducting comparative studies, and making real life decisions based on cost-benefit analysis. The National P&T Committee Competition Selection Committee will select the eight finalist teams to participate in the National P&T Competition at the AMCP Annual Meeting and Showcase. What is a P&T Committee? An Insurance companies usually allows an autonomous committee of Doctors and Pharmacists, who are not employed by the company, to update and maintain the company's prescription formulary. The committee decides whether or not a drug should be covered, as well as its price and placement for beneficiaries. All research, clinical notes, and pharmacoeconomic considerations are all evaluated. How much time does it take? It has been estimated that it takes approximately 30 hours of effective work, split over 2 months, per team member. Why do I gave to gain? Students have the opportunity to hone a variety of skills including critical analysis, presentation and research skills. The competition is designed to challenge students to gain a real world perspective of the formulary management process. It also separates yourself from others as only about 5% of students at UOP participate. What is the end product? 1- P&T committee monograph (10 page maximum) 2- Power-point presentation (max. of 30min and 36 slides) Optional: 1- Handouts (5 page maximum) to aid in the presentation More information: "How to" get started! Details of the competition Pharmacy & Therapeutic Competition Guide FAQ's What is the selection process like? Late October: Students must find their teams of 4 by the end of October. Any student, including 3rd years, may join. Late January- The Local Competition: All UOP P&T teams will present their decisions to a panel of professors and industry professionals. Early February: The panel will select a the best UOP team. Their monograph and presentation will be sent to national AMCP/FMCP HQ. Early March: The national AMCP/FMCP will announce the top 8 finalists. April: The 2014 AMCP Foundation 14th Annual National Student Pharmacist P&T Competition will take place on April 3 & 4, 2014 in Tampa, Florida. Any other questions?
